Bengaluru, Karnataka, 18th of February, 2026 : Doctors at Fortis Hospital Nagarbhavi, successfully saved the life of a 48-year-old man who was brought to the hospital in a critical condition following a major road traffic accident. The patient’s survival was made possible through seamless and timely coordination between multi-disciplinary teams, including emergency medicine, gastrointestinal surgery, anaesthesia, intensive care, orthopaedics and nursing.

The patient was in a state of severe shock, with dangerously low blood pressure and a significantly elevated heart rate, indicating massive internal bleeding and inadequate blood supply to vital organs when rushed to Fortis Nagarbhavi’s emergency department. Recognizing the life-threatening situation, the emergency medicine team immediately initiated resuscitation and activated the hospital’s trauma response protocol. Further evaluation revealed that the patient’s spleen had been severely damaged due to the high-impact injury, resulting in uncontrolled bleeding within the abdomen. Given the gravity of the situation, he was rushed to the operating theatre, where the gastrointestinal surgery team led by Dr. Pranav Honnavara Srinivasan, Consultant – Gastrointestinal Surgery, Fortis Hospital, Nagarbhavi, performed an emergency abdominal surgery.

Giving details of the case, Dr. Pranav Honnavara Srinivasan, Consultant – Gastrointestinal Surgery, Fortis Hospital Nagarbhavi, said, “The spleen is a highly vascular organ and injuries to it can result in rapid and life-threatening internal bleeding. In this case, the impact of the accident had completely shattered the spleen, leading to massive blood loss within the abdominal cavity. We found nearly three litres of blood spilled inside the abdomen, which indicated the criticality his condition. Emergency removal of the damaged spleen was the only definitive option to control the bleeding, stabilize the patient, and prevent irreversible organ failure. If not operated on time , the patient could have lost his life”

The surgery lasted for 2 hours, which was followed by post-operative monitoring in the Intensive Care Unit. Once his overall condition improved, the patient underwent surgery for a fracture in his left forearm. His recovery progressed steadily thereafter, and he responded well to treatment. He was discharged after 10 days in a stable condition.

Mr. Ratheef Naik, Facility Director, Fortis Hospital, Nagarbhavi, said, “This case highlights how timely intervention and multi-disciplinary teamwork can make the difference between life and death in severe trauma cases. From emergency response to surgery and intensive care, every team worked in close coordination to deliver the best possible outcome for the patient.”
