Dharmanagar, Tripura, 2nd of February, 2026 : On Monday, the Tripura Khet Majoor Union (TKMIU) submitted a deputation to the District Labour Officer of North Tripura district, protesting the initiative of the BJP-led Central Government to change the name of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) scheme.Through the deputation, TKMIU leaders alleged that renaming the MGNREGA scheme is an attempt to curtail the historic rights of the working people. They demanded the immediate withdrawal of this decision and the restoration of the original MGNREGA scheme.

The union also raised the demand to ensure a minimum of 200 days of employment per worker annually.Those present during the deputation included TKMIU Assistant Secretary Harkumar Nath, district committee members Niranjan Chakraborty, Abani Dey, Kaushik Chakraborty, Kamalaksha Chakraborty, and Matilal Das. Addressing the issue, the leaders stated that the MGNREGA scheme is a crucial lifeline for rural poor and working-class people, and any change in its name or policy interference is unacceptable.
