Dharmanagar, Tripura, 7th of February, 2026 : Despite repeated advance notices and warnings issued by the Dharmanagar Municipal Council, a number of traders had been illegally occupying government footpaths for a long time and conducting business there. As a result, pedestrians were facing serious difficulties, and the problem of traffic congestion in the town had been steadily worsening.In view of this situation, an eviction drive was carried out in Dharmanagar town on Saturday evening.

The operation was conducted under the leadership of Sub-Divisional Magistrate Debjani Choudhury, in joint initiative with the Dharmanagar Municipal Council. Police personnel and municipal staff actively participated in the drive. During the operation, temporary shops, tin sheds, wooden benches, and other illegal structures erected on the footpaths were removed. According to administrative sources, the eviction drive was not aimed at harassing any individual, but was undertaken to maintain urban discipline, normalize traffic movement, and ensure the safety of pedestrians.
Although some traders expressed dissatisfaction during the operation, the situation remained under control due to timely intervention by the administration.Sub-Divisional Magistrate Devyani Choudhury stated that strict legal action would be taken in the future against anyone found occupying government land or footpaths for business purposes. At the same time, the Municipal Council has urged traders to conduct their businesses at designated locations in accordance with prescribed rules.A section of local residents welcomed the administration’s initiative, expressing hope that it would make Dharmanagar town cleaner and free from traffic congestion.
