Dharmanagar, Tripura, 13th of March, 2026 : A brief spell of rain on Friday afternoon brought what seemed like an early hint of the monsoon. However, the short rainfall once again exposed the fragile drainage system of Dharmanagar town. Even this light rain led to waterlogging on several roads, causing significant inconvenience to pedestrians and motorists. As the rain suddenly poured down around noon, water quickly accumulated in different parts of the town. In particular, areas around the market, parts of the main road, and several by-lanes experienced minor waterlogging. In many places, drains overflowed and dirty water spilled onto the streets, making it difficult to distinguish between the road and the drains.Local residents alleged that the situation occurs mainly because the drains are not cleaned regularly and many outlets remain blocked.

As a result, even a small amount of rainfall leads to water accumulation. The overflowing drain water spreads across the roads, polluting the surroundings and creating an unpleasant smell that causes distress to residents. Pedestrians faced the worst difficulties during the rain. Many were seen carrying their shoes in their hands while crossing waterlogged stretches of road. Meanwhile, drivers of small vehicles and motorcycles were forced to move slowly. In some places, the accumulated water disrupted normal traffic movement.Shopkeepers in the market area also reported facing problems. Water accumulated in front of several shops, discouraging customers from visiting. According to them, if the drains are not cleaned and proper drainage arrangements are not made before the monsoon, the situation could become far worse in the coming months.

Residents have demanded immediate action from the municipal authorities. They urged regular cleaning of drains, reopening of blocked outlets, and special measures in areas prone to waterlogging. Thus, while Friday’s brief rainfall provided temporary relief from the heat, it also served as a reminder that strengthening Dharmanagar’s drainage system before the arrival of the monsoon has become an urgent necessity.
