Dharmanagar, Tripura, 21st of May 2026 : Residents of Panisagar subdivision in North Tripura staged a massive protest on Thursday demanding the regular stoppage of the Agartala–Silchar bound train at Panisagar Railway Station, a long-standing demand of the local people. Alleging continued negligence by the railway authorities despite repeated appeals, hundreds of residents took to the streets in anger.

From early morning, people from various parts of the subdivision gathered at the Panisagar railway station area. The protesters later occupied the railway tracks, disrupting train movement and raising slogans in support of their demand. As the agitation intensified, several demonstrators even lay down on the tracks as a mark of protest.

According to local residents, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Silchar-bound train used to halt at Panisagar to facilitate medical emergencies and essential travel. However, the stoppage was later withdrawn, causing immense hardship to patients, students, traders, and daily commuters of the subdivision. The protesters alleged that despite Panisagar being an important subdivision, the railway authorities have continuously ignored the basic transportation needs of the people. They warned that if the train stoppage is not restored immediately, a larger movement would be launched in the coming days.

Following information about the blockade, officials from the administration and railway police rushed to the spot and held discussions with the agitators. After receiving assurances from the authorities, the protesters eventually withdrew the blockade, and normal train services resumed. The incident created widespread tension and discussion across the area. It now remains to be seen whether the railway authorities will take any positive steps in response to this long-pending public demand.
