Dharmanagar, Tripura, 28th of May 2026 : A shocking incident in Ward No. 3 of Dewanpasha area under Dharmanagar Police Station in North District created widespread panic on Wednesday night. A woman was critically injured after allegedly being attacked by her husband with a sharp machete following prolonged family disputes. She is currently undergoing treatment at Dharmanagar District Hospital in critical condition.According to reports, the incident took place around 8:30 PM on Wednesday, May 27, at a rented house in Ward No. 3 of Dewanpasha Panchayat.
The injured woman has been identified as 45-year-old Shilpi Sen Barman, while the accused husband is 50-year-old Joydeb Barman. Their permanent residence is in Kanchanpur. The couple, along with their children, had been living in the rented house since December last year.House owner Shashanka Debnath stated that frequent quarrels and domestic disputes had been occurring between the couple since they moved into the house. According to him, local residents had even held meetings earlier on Wednesday in an attempt to resolve the issue.
Members of a local organization,Chetanashakti Samiti, had also reportedly been trying for several days to mediate the family conflict. Regarding the cause of the incident, the house owner said that Shilpi Sen Barman had recently lodged a complaint at the Dharmanagar Women Police Station after she failed to find some important divorce-related documents and suspected that her husband had hidden them. Following the complaint, police personnel contacted Joydeb Barman over the phone, after which tensions allegedly escalated further.At the time of the incident, the house owner’s son heard screams coming from the room and rushed to the spot. Upon opening the door, he found Shilpi Sen Barman lying on the floor in a blood-soaked condition.
Allegedly, Joydeb Barman fled the scene carrying the sharp weapon.Shashanka Debnath immediately informed local residents after realizing the seriousness of the situation. Former Yuvrajnagar MLA Malina Debnath and local panchayat representatives were also notified. Fire service personnel from Dharmanagar quickly arrived at the scene and rescued the critically injured woman before shifting her to Dharmanagar District Hospital.Sources said the woman sustained a deep wound on the back of her neck due to the machete attack. Doctors are currently monitoring her condition closely.
The incident has sparked concern across the locality.Former MLA Malina Debnath and other local representatives visited the hospital after the incident to inquire about the victim’s condition and assured support to the family.Meanwhile, police from Dharmanagar Police Station launched a search operation with the help of local residents and eventually succeeded in arresting the accused, Joydeb Barman. He is currently in police custody, and an investigation into the incident is underway.
