Agartala, Tripura, 3rd of July, 2026 : With the initiative of Social Welfare and Social Education Department Government of Tripura observance the State Level International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, 2026 at Town Hall, Agartala, Tripura on Thursday (2nd July, 2026).
In the presence of many distinguished dignitaries Hon’ble Social Welfare and Social Education minister Tinku Roy was inaugurated the programme by lighting the lamp.

Keeping the youths engaged in creative activities and sports would keep them away from the sinister effects of drugs. Government efforts alone are not enough to eliminate drug abuse and called upon every citizen to take responsibility. Today Tinku Roy, Minister for Social Welfare & Social Education made these remarks after inaugurating the State-Level Programme commemorating the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking 2026 was held at Town Hall, Agartala. He said, a 200-bed de-addiction centre is being established at Brishamganj with an estimated cost of 121 crore. He also said the government is planning to set up 50-bed de-addiction centres at the district level across the state.
Organised by the social welfare and social education department the event was also attended by Dipak Majumder, Mayor of Agartala Municipal Corporation; Jharma Debbarma, Chairperson of the Tripura Commission for Women; Jayanti Debbarma, Chairperson of the Tripura Commission for Protection of Child Rights; Biswajit Shil, acting Sabhadhipati of West Tripura Zilla Parishad; Tapan Kumar Das, Special Secretary of the Social Welfare & Social Education Department, Dr. Vishal Kumar, District Magistrate and Collector of West Tripura; and Namit Pathak, Superintendent of Police, West Tripura along with the director of Lalfaktlinga Hrangchal.

Chairperson of the Tripura Commission for Women, Jhama Debbarma, also addressed the gathering and spoke about the importance of creating awareness and strengthening society’s role in protecting young people from the dangers of substance abuse. Welcome address was given by the special secretary of the social welfare and social education department Tapan Kumar Das. He highlighted the department’s activities he informed that debate, slogan-writing and drawing competitions were organized across the districts.

Sabhadhipati of West Tripura Zila Parishad presided over the event. The finals of school and college-level debate competitions were also held during the programme. Prizes were distributed to winners and participants following the Minister’s address. During the pogramme all dignitaries and attendees took a collective pledge to build a Drug-Free Tripura and contribute towards a healthier, safer and drug-free India.
