Agartala, Tripura, 11th of July, 2026 : The state government is implementing various plans for increasing fish production and socio-economic development of the fish farmers. The state has an annual demand of 1.17 lakh MT fish and currently around 85,000 MT fish is produced in the state. So, the deficit comes to around 30, 000 MT which is being met by importing fish from outside states. This information was provided by the Hon’ble Forest Minister Animesh Debbarma on Friday (10th July, 2026) after inaugurating a workshop on empowering fish farmers organized on the occasion of the 26th National Fish Farmers Day celebrations at the College of Fisheries at Lembuchera, Agartala, Tripura.

Addressing the audience the Forest Minister said, as the state still has a gap of 30,000 MT fish, there is huge potential for fishery-based self-reliance. The state government, under various government schemes like Pradhan Matri Matsya Sampada Yojana, is providing financial assistance, technical support and training to the fish farmers. Farmers have to grab this opportunity.

The Forest Minister also stated that the scientists should take a more pro-active role to devise a scientific method to produce more fish in a limited space. Because fish farming has a significant role in strengthening rural economy. The Forest Minister also emphasized opening requisite market for the produced fish. He urged the people of the state to increase fish production by getting more associated with fish farming and make the state self-reliant through this.

Among others who spoke on the occasion included the head of the ICAR regional centre Dr. Burhan U Chowdhury, Principal of the College of Fisheries at Lembuchera Dr. Debasis Sen and joint director of the state science, technology and environment department Anjan Sengupta. Welcome address was delivered by the Dean of the College Prof. A. B. Patel. Vote of thanks was given by Prof. Sagar Chandra Mandal from the college. At the event Biswajit Das, a successful fish farmer of Tripura was felicitated. Besides, fish feed and fish fingerlings were distributed to 150 fish farmers. The Forest Minister also inaugurated an exhibition. The inaugural session was followed by interaction between the fish farmers and scientists.
