Dharmanagar, Tripura, 17th of July 2026 : Amid the festive celebrations of Rath Yatra on Thursday (16th July, 2026) evening, a massive fire broke out in two government residential quarters inside the Dharmanagar Police Station campus. The flames spread rapidly, leaving both quarters largely gutted. The incident created panic in the area, casting a shadow over the festive atmosphere.According to eyewitnesses, smoke was first noticed coming from one of the quarters. Within minutes, the fire intensified and spread to the adjacent quarter. Upon receiving the information, multiple fire engines from the Dharmanagar Fire and Emergency Services rushed to the spot and immediately began firefighting operations. Thanks to the prompt response and relentless efforts of the firefighters, the blaze was brought under control before it could spread to nearby residential quarters.

Officials from the Fire and Emergency Services suspect that the fire may have been caused by an electrical short circuit. Preliminary estimates suggest that the incident resulted in property losses worth approximately ₹15–20 lakh. Furniture, electrical appliances, clothing, important documents, and other valuable household belongings were completely destroyed in the fire.
Fortunately, no one was inside the quarters when the fire broke out, and no casualties or injuries were reported. However, the affected families lost almost all of their household possessions.

Sources alleged that the residential quarters at Dharmanagar Police Station had been in a dilapidated condition for a long time. Electrical faults and short circuits were reportedly frequent, while peeling plaster, deteriorating wiring, cracked walls, and other structural issues had remained unattended despite repeated requests for repairs. According to the allegations, the concerned authorities failed to take timely action.Local residents believe that proper maintenance and timely renovation of the electrical infrastructure could have prevented such a major accident. The incident has once again raised serious concerns over the safety and upkeep of government residential quarters. The fire, which occurred on the day of Rath Yatra, has left police personnel, their families, and local residents deeply concerned.
