Dharmanagar, Tripura, 4th of August, 2026 : Protesting against the installation of smart meters, the new electricity tariff, and the alleged move toward privatization of power services, the Dharmanagar Sub-Divisional Committee of the Electricity Consumers and Employees Welfare Association organized a protest rally and submitted a memorandum on Monday (3rd August, 2026).
The protesters marched through various parts of Dharmanagar town before reaching the office of the Executive Engineer of the Dharmanagar Division of TSECL, where they submitted a 12-point memorandum to the authorities.

During the rally, participants raised slogans demanding the cancellation of smart meter installations, withdrawal of the recent electricity tariff hike, protection of consumers’ interests, and opposition to the privatization of electricity services.
In the memorandum, the organization demanded the immediate withdrawal of TSECL’s new tariff order, cancellation of the smart meter installation decision, and continuation of the existing digital meters. They also called for keeping electricity generation, transmission, and distribution entirely under government control.
Other demands included ensuring uninterrupted and quality power supply, filling vacant posts in TSECL, providing free medical treatment to employees injured while on duty, implementing service rules for TSECL employees, withdrawing the Electricity Amendment Bill 2025, and recognizing electricity as a basic right of the people.
The organization’s leaders stated that the movement would continue to safeguard the interests of both consumers and employees. They warned that if their demands were not met, they would intensify the agitation through a larger mass movement in the coming days.
The TSECL authorities accepted the memorandum and assured the delegation that the demands would be forwarded to the higher authorities for consideration.
