Powering India’s Energy Needs Through Leadership: IIM Nagpur’s Executive MBA In Energy Management.

Nagpur, 11th of August, 2026 :: India’s energy sector is undergoing one of the most significant transformations in its history. As the country accelerates investments in renewable energy, green hydrogen, electric mobility, battery storage and smart power systems, the focus is increasingly shifting from energy generation to energy management.

The challenge today is not merely producing more power. It is about ensuring energy security, sustainability and affordability while navigating rapidly evolving technologies, regulations and market dynamics. As India moves towards its ambitious target of 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030 and net-zero emissions by 2070, a new category of professionals is emerging—leaders who can bridge technology, policy and business.

Recognising this need and challenges, the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Nagpur, in collaboration with the National Power Training Institute (NPTI), launched the Executive MBA in Energy Management, a specialised programme designed for working professionals seeking to lead India’s energy transition.

Realising this vision will require leaders who can integrate technology, business strategy, public policy, and sustainability. IIM Nagpur’s Executive MBA in Energy Management is designed to nurture such future-ready professionals who will lead India’s energy transformation and contribute to the nation’s long-term growth and energy security,” says Dr. Bhimaraya Metri, Director, IIM Nagpur.

The response to the programme’s inaugural batch reflects the growing demand for specialised management education in the sector. The first cohort comprises 41 professionals representing more than 35 organisations from across the country, with participants coming from 17 states and Union Territories. Together, they bring an average work experience of 11.2 years, with experience ranging from three to 23 years. Nearly one-fourth of the batch consists of senior leaders, including Deputy General Managers, General Managers and Assistant Vice Presidents, while another 44 per cent are middle-management professionals.

What makes the cohort particularly noteworthy is its representation across the entire energy value chain. Participants come from organisations involved in power generation, transmission, distribution, renewable energy, oil and gas, energy consulting, industrial energy management and policy. Nearly 39 per cent of the cohort represents major Central Public Sector Undertakings such as POWERGRID, NTPC, Indian Oil Corporation, SJVN and Damodar Valley Corporation. The batch also includes professionals from multinational corporations, private energy companies, government organisations and even India’s offshore energy operations in Singapore.

According to Prof. Nikunj Kumar Jain, Chairperson of the Executive MBA in Energy Management programme, such diversity enriches the learning experience.

Designed specifically for working professionals with a minimum of three years of experience, the two-year programme allows participants to continue their careers while pursuing advanced management education. Classes are conducted during evenings and weekends through a flexible blended-learning format.

The programme combines management fundamentals with sector-specific expertise and includes more than 810 hours of learning across core courses, electives and a field project. Participants also undertake campus immersion modules at IIM Nagpur and NPTI, enabling direct interaction with faculty, industry experts and peers.

As energy systems become increasingly interconnected, digital and sustainable, the demand for leaders capable of managing both technological and organisational transformation is expected to rise sharply. With admissions now open for its second batch, IIM Nagpur’s Executive MBA in Energy Management reflects a broader reality: India’s energy future will depend not only on new technologies and infrastructure, but also on leaders who can translate ambition into action.
