New Delhi, Delhi, 14th of August, 2026 : Indraprastha College for Women, University of Delhi, observed Vibhajan Vibhishika Smriti Diwas on 14 August 2026, commemorating the millions whose lives were deeply affected by the Partition of India. The programme was organised on the theme “भारत का विभाजन: उजड़ने, बिछड़ने और बसने की गाथा” (India’s Partition: Stories of Displacement, Separation, and Resettlement).

The programme was addressed by Dr. Sudhanshu Trivedi, Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha, who reflected on the enormous human cost of Partition. He highlighted the scale of displacement and loss and emphasised that behind the statistics were stories of families separated, homes abandoned and communities disrupted. He stressed the importance of remembering these experiences with sensitivity and empathy.

Additionally, Dr. Trivedi highlighted the distinctive position accorded to women in Indian civilisation and history, where women have traditionally been revered as embodiments and sources of Shakti, wisdom and prosperity. He emphasised the enduring significance of this cultural ethos and appreciated the initiatives of the Hon’ble Prime Minister towards women’s empowerment, recognising their role in strengthening women’s participation, dignity and leadership in contemporary India.

The Principal of Indraprastha College for Women, Dr Poonam Kumria highlighted the significance of remembering Partition as a living history rather than a distant historical event. She emphasised that the resilience of Partition survivors, who rebuilt their lives despite immense loss and displacement, remains an enduring proof to the strength of the human spirit. She urged students to engage with this history thoughtfully and draw lessons of empathy, unity, peace and harmony.

The Principal further highlighted  the College’s commitment to creating platforms that encourage students to engage critically with India’s past and understand its relevance to the present. She emphasised that preserving memories and listening to lived experiences are essential to building a more inclusive and compassionate society.

The programme brought together students, faculty members and the College community in remembrance of those affected by Partition and concluded with a collective commitment to preserve their memories and uphold the values of peace, unity and mutual understanding.
