Dharmanagar, Tripura, 17th of August, 2026 : The 80th Independence Day was celebrated across the country on August 15 with due dignity, enthusiasm and patriotic fervour. As part of the celebrations, the district-level main Independence Day programme of North Tripura district was held at the BBI Ground in Dharmanagar on Saturday(15th August, 2026). The programme began with the hoisting of the National Flag by Santana Chakma, Minister of Industries and Commerce, Jail and OBC Welfare, Government of Tripura.

Following the flag hoisting, floral tributes were paid in honour of the National Flag. The glorious history of India’s freedom struggle and the sacrifices made by the brave freedom fighters were remembered during the programme.The significance of Independence and citizens’ responsibilities towards the nation were also highlighted.Among those present were North Tripura District Magistrate Chandni Chandran, North Tripura Superintendent of Police Avinash Rai, Sub- Divisional Magistrate Debyani Chowdhury, Dharmanagar Municipal Council Chairperson Mitali Das Sen, along with senior officials from various administrative departments. Officials of Government departments, police and security personnel, representatives of various organisations and distinguished citizens also attended the programme.

Addressing the gathering, Minister Santana Chakma paid tribute to the sacrifices of the freedom fighters. She said that preserving the true spirit of Independence requires maintaining national unity, peace and communal harmony while continuing to take the country forward on the path of development. She also stressed the importance of conveying the history of the freedom struggle and the ideals of the great freedom fighters to the younger generation.The flag-hoisting ceremony at BBI Ground created an emotional and deeply patriotic atmosphere. On the special occasion marking 80 years of India’s Independence, the messages of patriotism, national unity, sovereignty and progress remained at the heart of the celebrations.With the participation of administrative officials, security personnel, representatives of various organisations and members of the public, the main Independence Day programme in Dharmanagar turned into a grand gathering celebrating the nation’s freedom and achievements.
