Agartala, Tripura, 29th of August, 2026 : To encourage the students in science, technology and research works, various initiatives have been taken in the colleges. “College Bio-tech Clubs” have been established to encourage them in scientific and innovative research activities. This was informed by the Higher Education Minister Kishor Barman at the Assembly on Friday (28th August, 2026). Replying to a question raised by MLA Ranjit Das, he said, utmost priority has been given to research-based activities in higher education sector. So far 17 College Bio-tech Clubs have been formed.
The Higher Education Minister said arrangements have been made to facilitate participation of students in seminar, workshop, speech, field visit, social survey, laboratory-based learning, electronic technology, desktop publishing and industrial visits In order to acquaint the graduate students with literary discussion, and research studies, electronic journal, books and research materials have been procured. He also informed that new buildings are being constructed for Netaji Subhash College in Udaipur and MBB College in Agartala. Necessary law has been enacted for upgrading the Tripura Institute of Technology into a technical university. During the last three years, total 14,302 college students at the degree and diploma level have participated in research or innovative activities.
On another question raised by MLA Sudip Roy Barman, the Higher Education Minister informed in written form that during the last three years, total Rs. 89.77 crore has been allocated for the development of infrastructure in government colleges. And so far Rs. 85.27 crore has been spent from this fund. With this investment 5 new college buildings, 7 college research laboratories, 1 college library and 15 smart classrooms have been built. There is also a plan to construct new buildings for Rabindranath Tagore College in Bishalgarh, Michael Madhusudhan Datta College, in Sabroom, Swami Vivekananda College in Mohanpur, Ambedkar College at Fatikroy, Adwaita Mallabarman Memorial College in Kamalpur, BBMC at Agartala, Dasarath Deb Memorial College in Khowai subdivision and Government Degree College at Charilam in the next financial year.
In response to another question raised by MLA Ashok Chandra Mitra, the Higher Education Minister informed that at present there are 41 colleges in the state under the higher education department. Out of these, 29 are government general degree college, 5 are vocational college, 6 are polytechnic and 1 is technical college. All these colleges together have 69,677 students.
