Apollo Performs Rare Zero-Contrast Heart Valve Procedure, Saving Kidney Transplant Recipient Once Considered Untreatable.

Bengaluru, Karnataka, 24th of September, 2026 : Apollo Hospitals, Bannerghatta Road, Bengaluru, has successfully performed one of India’s few absolute Zero-Contrast Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) procedures on a 68-year-old kidney transplant recipient who had previously been considered too high-risk for treatment at multiple centres.

The procedure was performed without using a single millilitre of iodinated contrast dye, thereby protecting the patient’s transplanted kidney while successfully treating his severe aortic stenosis. The patient had multiple medical complexities, including a failing transplanted kidney, severe frailty, heavily calcified blood vessels and dissected femoral arteries, which made both open-heart surgery and conventional TAVR extremely high-risk.

Using advanced multi-modality imaging, including MRI, vascular ultrasound and fluoroscopic guidance, Apollo’s Structural Heart team completed the procedure with exactly 0 mL of contrast dye. The patient’s cardiac symptoms improved significantly within hours, and he was walking the following day and discharged three days after the procedure. At his one-month follow-up, he reported complete relief from his symptoms, healthy urine output, stable kidney function, and no requirement for dialysis.

This case highlights the role of advanced imaging, meticulous planning, and multidisciplinary collaboration in enabling complex cardiac interventions for patients who may otherwise have limited treatment options.
