Congress Protest In Dharmanagar, Demands Immediate Arrest Of Chief Election Commissioner.

Dharmanagar, Tripura, 29th of September, 2026 : As part of a nationwide protest demanding the arrest of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, the Dharmanagar District Congress on Tuesday (29th September, 2026) organized a protest march and demonstration in North Tripura. The programme, organized by the Dharmanagar District Congress, created tension across the town. A scuffle also broke out between police and protesters in front of the North District Magistrate’s office.

On Tuesday, the protest march began from the Dharmanagar District Congress Bhavan. After passing through various roads in the town, the march reached the District Magistrate’s office, where police stopped the protesters. The situation soon turned tense, and a scuffle broke out between police personnel and Congress workers. A large police contingent was deployed at the spot to maintain control of the situation.

Congress leaders and workers staged a prolonged sit-in protest in front of the District Magistrate’s office. As part of the demonstration, an effigy of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar was also burnt.

Addressing the gathering, Tripura Pradesh Congress president Ashish Kumar Saha raised several allegations regarding the role of the Election Commission. He alleged that the BJP had used the Chief Election Commissioner to harm the Opposition in various elections by illegally deleting the names of thousands of voters. He said that after allegations of electoral irregularities emerged in West Bengal and several other states, people across the country had joined the protests.Ashish Kumar Saha said that their primary demand was the immediate arrest of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the imposition of exemplary punishment.He further alleged that the BJP had deliberately removed Opposition members from Parliament and passed what he described as a “black law,” making it difficult to bring allegations against or arrest the Chief Election Commissioner. He also alleged that the BJP was using the Election Commission to capture power through illegal means in one state after another.

Besides Pradesh Congress president Ashish Kumar Saha, the protest was attended by Pradesh Congress Committee member Chayan Bhattacharjee, Dharmanagar District Congress president Nirupam Dey, and several other leaders, workers, and supporters of the district and Pradesh Congress.
