Khowai, Tripura, 2nd of October, 2026 : For the past 44 years, potter and idol maker Nirmal Rudra Pal of North Chebri has been creating idols with dedication and skill. Over the years, he has played a significant role in adding to the festive spirit of Durga Puja through his craftsmanship. However, the veteran artisan expressed his disappointment that although the cost of making idols has increased over time, he is not receiving prices that match the rising expenses.

The veteran artisan said that he had received orders for around 14 to 15 idols in previous years during the Durga Puja season. This year, however, he has managed to secure orders for only nine idols. With the prices of clay, straw, bamboo, paint and other materials continuing to rise, the cost of production has increased considerably. He also noted that the lengthy and labour-intensive process of idol making adds to the burden, while the returns remain comparatively low.

On one hand, the rising cost of materials for making idols and, on the other, the decline in the number of orders have placed the artisan under financial pressure. After earning his livelihood through this craft for the past 44 years, he is now concerned about the future of the traditional art form that he has devoted his life to.

The contribution of potters and idol makers in bringing the joy of festivals to people’s homes is undeniable. However, artisans are concerned about the survival of this traditional art form if they do not receive fair compensation for their hard work and craftsmanship.
