The Indian Parliamentary Delegation Led By Shri Harivansh, Hon’ble Deputy Chairman, Rajya Sabha, Continued Its Participation In The 153rd IPU Assembly In Arusha, Tanzania, On The Third Day Of The Assembly, I.E. 07 October 2026.

Bangalore, Karnataka, 8th of October, 2026 : Shri Harivansh, Hon’ble Deputy Chairman, Rajya Sabha, attended the meetings of the 153rd IPU Assembly and participated in the General Debate on the theme “Enhancing good governance and empowering communities through inclusivity, trust and opportunities for all”. Hon’ble Deputy Chairman, inter alia, urged parliamentarians to strengthen transparency, uphold accountability and nurture public trust in furtherance of good governance.

Dr. Sanjay Jaiswal, MP, Lok Sabha, participated in the workshop on ‘Mental health across generations: Coping with digital overload, economic pressure and uncertainty’.

Smt. Aparajita Sarangi, MP, Lok Sabha, participated in the Panel discussion on the ‘UN country team in the United Republic of Tanzania as the reflection of a reformed UN system’ at the Standing Committee on United Nations Affairs.

Smt. Bijuli Kalita Medhi, MP, Lok Sabha, participated in the Working Group on Science and Technology. She also participated in the Standing Committee on Sustainable Development in the debate on the theme of the next resolution entitled ‘Parliamentary leadership to protect mountain and ocean ecosystems and achieve the 30% conservation goal by 2030’.

Smt. Kamaljeet Sehrawat, MP, Lok Sabha, participated in the Panel discussion on ‘Beyond commitments for peace: The role of parliaments in the enforcement of international humanitarian law and international human rights law’. She also participated in the Workshop on ‘Promoting ethical AI serving Child rights’ and the meeting of the Committee to Promote Respect for International Humanitarian Law.

Dr. Lata Wankhede, MP, Lok Sabha, participated in the Workshop on ‘What’s on our plates? Delivering healthy food in a changing climate’.

Dr. Sasmit Patra, MP, Rajya Sabha, participated in the Standing Committee on Peace and International Security – Expert hearing on the theme of the next resolution entitled ‘Strengthening maritime security and protecting critical infrastructure in times of conflict: The role of parliaments in safeguarding international navigation and global economic stability’.

The Members of the Delegation led by Hon’ble Deputy Chairman, Rajya Sabha, also held a bilateral meeting with H.E. Konstantin Kosachev, Deputy Chairman of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of Russia, and discussed issues of mutual interest.

Hon’ble Deputy Chairman, Rajya Sabha, also met the outgoing President of the IPU, Ms. Tulia Ackson, and conveyed his appreciation for her efforts to make the working of the IPU inclusive and vibrant. He lauded her concerted initiatives to deepen and broaden Parliamentary Democracy among the comity of nations.

Secretary-General, Rajya Sabha, met Ms. Anda Filip, who was elected as the Secretary General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), the first woman to hold the post in the IPU’s 137-year history at the 152nd IPU Assembly held at Istanbul, Türkiye. He conveyed the full support of Parliament of India to the ideals of IPU for promotion of democracy and peace. While concluding his interaction, he wished her for a successful and eventful tenure.

The Indian Parliamentary Delegation led by Hon’ble Deputy Chairman, Rajya Sabha, participated in the voting for inclusion of an emergency item in the agenda of the Assembly. After the vote, the IPU President announced that the item, “Urgent parliamentary action to address climate-related disasters and strengthen resilience in the Himalayan region and other vulnerable regions”, proposed by Nepal and supported by India, among others, had been adopted as the emergency item of the 153rd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union being held in Arusha.
