Dharmanagar, Tripura, 19th of February, 2026 : A serious situation has emerged in Colony No. 4 and 5 under Rajnagar Gram Panchayat in the Anandabazar area of Dharmanagar subdivision, North Tripura, where several cows and goats have reportedly died after being bitten by a suspected rabid dog.The incidents began nearly a month ago. Initially, six cows had died, but as of last Wednesday, the death toll has risen to 18. Several more cows and goats are currently reported to be infected. Most families in the area are financially weak, and the repeated loss of livestock has pushed them into severe economic distress. According to local sources, after the issue was highlighted in the media, a vaccination drive was initiated on February 8. However, residents allege that the vaccination process was not properly conducted. On the first day, only some animals were vaccinated, and the remaining vaccines were allegedly handed over to the livestock owners with instructions to administer them themselves. There are also allegations that each family had to pay ₹500 to the visiting veterinary staff.

On February 6, MLA Shailendra Chandra Nath of the Jubarajnagar Assembly Constituency was informed about the matter and submitted a written complaint to the Sub-Divisional Magistrate. Although the administration assured that a fresh vaccination drive would be conducted, locals claim that no effective follow-up action has been taken.Out of fear of infection, many residents are reluctant to keep the sick animals at home. Several infected cows have been tied in distant rubber plantations to prevent the spread of the disease. On Thursday, MLA Shailendra Chandra Nath visited the affected families to assess the situation. He remarked, “Those who call the cow ‘Gomata,’ where are they now? The cows are spending their days starving in rubber plantations.” From the spot, he contacted the SDM over the phone and demanded immediate and effective measures. The administration has assured support to the affected families. Meanwhile, local resident Gajendra Chandra Nath stated that three of his cows were infected, one of which has already died. Due to fear of infection, he is hesitant to approach the sick animals. He claimed that several neighboring families are facing similar problems. The affected families have appealed to the Chief Minister for immediate compensation and proper medical intervention. Residents of Rajnagar Colony are now looking towards the administration for swift and decisive action.
