Dharmanagar, Tripura, 17th of March, 2026 : On the very first day of the month of Chaitra, several areas under Dharmanagar subdivision in North Tripura were severely affected by nature’s fury. A sudden and powerful cyclone that struck late Sunday night left large parts of at least three villages devastated. Numerous houses, shops, trees, and electric poles were destroyed in the storm. According to local sources, several domestic animals and birds were also killed in the disaster.

Local residents reported that the violent storm began unexpectedly at around 12:45 a.m. on Sunday night. The cyclone continued to wreak havoc in phases for nearly 40 minutes. As a result, Ward No. 3 of Fulbari Gram Panchayat, Ward No. 1 of East Fulbari Gram Panchayat, and parts of Churaibari Gram Panchayat suffered extensive damage. The worst impact was reported from the Churaibari market area, where around 15 to 20 shops were completely destroyed. Some shops were blown away by the force of the wind, while the tin roofs of many others were torn off and later seen hanging from tree branches, betel nut trees, or electric wires.Several electric poles were uprooted by the storm, and power lines were snapped in many places, leading to a complete disruption of electricity supply across the affected areas from Sunday night. One affected shopkeeper said that when he reached the market after hearing about the storm, he found the entire market area reduced to rubble. There was no trace left of his own shop cabinet. He appealed to the administration to quickly assess the damage and extend support to the affected traders.Deputy Pradhan of Fulbari Gram Panchayat, Abdul Salam, stated that the cyclone caused widespread destruction throughout the area. According to preliminary estimates, at least 30 to 35 houses were partially or completely damaged. In some cases, tin roofs were blown away, while in others, large trees fell on houses, causing severe damage. He also mentioned that many valuable agarwood trees — a major source of income for several poor families in the area — were broken by the storm, causing significant financial losses. He added, “People in this area have never witnessed such a devastating cyclone before.”He urged the administration to come forward quickly to assist the affected families and business owners with necessary relief and support.Meanwhile, until Monday afternoon, no representatives from the district or subdivision administration had reportedly reached the affected areas, leading to deep disappointment and anger among the local residents. The demand for immediate administrative intervention and relief assistance is growing stronger among the affected people.
