Dharmanagar, Tripura, 29th of March 2026 : The political atmosphere in Dharmanagar is heating up ahead of the April 9 by-election for the 56-Dharmanagar constituency. As the polling day draws closer, opposition parties are increasingly vocal against the ruling BJP. In particular, the Congress has been raising a series of serious allegations, attempting to put the BJP on the defensive.Senior Congress leaders have intensified their campaign in support of the party’s candidate, Chayan Bhattacharya. Taking part in public outreach programs across various parts of Dharmanagar, Congress leader Sudip Roy Barman launched a sharp attack on the BJP government.

He alleged that the BJP has only made promises in the name of development, with little to no real impact on the lives of ordinary people. According to him, many areas in Dharmanagar still suffer from a lack of basic infrastructure such as drinking water, healthcare services, and proper roads.

Taking a dig at the government, he said, “Development has benefited only a select few individuals and party supporters, who have amassed significant wealth, while common people remain deprived.”

He further accused the BJP of attempting to influence the democratic process. He claimed that the party is relying on the Election Commission, financial power, muscle power, and EVMs to secure victory.Referring to a controversial remark allegedly made by a BJP minister, he stated, “No matter whom people vote for in the ADC elections, the votes will ultimately go to the BJP—such statements are a blatant insult to democracy.”

Adding to the controversy, he alleged that a local councillor had openly claimed that the BJP candidate would win even without votes. He described such remarks as a “threat to democracy.”

The Congress leadership expressed confidence that the people will have the final say in this by-election and will vote for change. They also assured that if elected, they would prioritize restoring law and order in Dharmanagar, curb corruption and commission-based practices, and work towards improving the standard of living of the people. With such intense political exchanges, the by-election has already turned Dharmanagar into a political hotspot. All eyes are now on April 9, as the voters’ verdict will determine the future political equation.
