Dharmanagar, Tripura, 11th of February, 2026 : In an initiative to increase public awareness and prevent child marriage in the North District, the administration has formally launched a special awareness rath (campaign vehicle). The rath was inaugurated on Tuesday at a brief ceremony held at the Dharmanagar Sub- Divisional premises, where District Magistrate Chandni Chandran flagged off the campaign.

According to administrative sources, the initiative has been introduced as part of the “Child Marriage Free India” campaign. The primary objective of the programme is to raise awareness among people across all sections of society that child marriage is a punishable offence under the law, and to encourage public participation in safeguarding the rights of children and adolescents.
Addressing the gathering, the District Magistrate stated that child marriage is not merely a social evil but also a major obstacle to the physical, mental, and educational development of children. She emphasized that a joint effort by both the administration and society is essential to completely eradicate this practice.Along with the District Magistrate, the inaugural programme was attended by Sujata Bhattacharya, Project Manager of the NGO “Bitan,” officials from various government departments, educators, social workers, and other prominent members of the locality. Speakers highlighted that, under existing law, marriage of a boy below 21 years and a girl below 18 years is considered illegal, and strict legal action will be taken against those involved in such incidents.
Administrative sources further informed that the awareness rath will visit various rural and urban areas of the North District over the next few days. Through this campaign, the administration aims to disseminate awareness messages among the public regarding the harmful effects of child marriage and the legal provisions related to it. Parents and local community leaders have also been urged to come forward collectively to combat this social issue
