Dharmanagar, Tripura, 10th of February, 2026 : A new dimension has been added to the political equation in Dharmanagar of North Tripura. On Tuesday, at the Dharmanagar District Congress Bhavan, a total of 14 voters from three families— including a former BJP booth president— formally joined the Indian National Congress in the presence of Pradesh Congress President Ashish Kumar Saha. The new members were welcomed into the party as the state president handed over Congress flags to them. Alongside the joining programme, an important organisational meeting with district leaders was also held at the District Congress Bhavan. Among those present were North District Congress President Digbijay Chakraborty, Pradesh Congress Assistant Secretary Chayan Bhattacharya, Pradesh Congress members Kebel Nandi and Hiralal Nath, and Pradesh Congress General Secretary Abdul Bachhit Choudhury, along with several other district- and state-level Congress leaders and workers.

Later, in a press conference, detailed discussions were held regarding the upcoming “Save MGNREGA” programme scheduled for the 17th and the proposed march to Raj Bhavan. Congress leaders emphasized the importance of the movement, highlighting demands such as ensuring the right to work under the MGNREGA scheme, clearing pending wages, and maintaining transparency in the project.During his address, Pradesh Congress President Ashish Kumar Saha clearled the strong possibility of understanding and alliance among opposition parties in the upcoming by-election in Dharmanagar. He stated that unity among opposition forces is the need of the hour to protect democracy and people’s rights.According to political observers, the shift of several voters from the BJP camp to the Congress, along with the state president’s remarks, signals a new political alignment in Dharmanagar. Attention is now focused on how these developments may influence the political landscape ahead of the upcoming by-election.
