Dharmanagar, Tripura, 6th of April, 2026 : Political tensions are steadily intensifying ahead of the upcoming Dharmanagar by-election. In this context, a rally was held on Monday in Dharmanagar town led by former Chief Minister Manik Sarkar. Following the rally, a significant public meeting took place at Kalidighi.

Addressing the gathering, Sarkar launched a strong attack on the current state government, raising multiple issues including unemployment, corruption, law and order, and administrative failures. In his speech, he alleged that despite around 50,000 vacant posts in the state, the Bharatiya Janata Party-led government has remained completely indifferent in filling them.He claimed that during the Left Front government, vacancies were filled regularly and transparently. However, under the present regime, lakhs of educated youths are unemployed, which he described as a matter of serious concern for the state’s future.Expressing concern over the law and order situation, Sarkar said, “Most police stations in the state are now under the influence of the ruling party, depriving common people of justice.”
He further alleged that attacks on opposition workers and supporters are increasing, while the police often fail to act impartially. Highlighting issues in government offices, he stated that ordinary citizens are still facing harassment while accessing services. He also alleged that many deserving individuals remain excluded from the ration system.Raising allegations of corruption in rural employment schemes, especially under MGNREGA, he said, “A scheme meant to secure livelihoods of the common people is being plagued by large-scale irregularities and corruption.”He also pointed to irregularities involving teachers and government employees, alleging incidents of office capture, pressure tactics, and misuse of power, which he said are weakening the administrative structure and hindering overall development. Referring to Dharmanagar, he noted that despite being the second- largest town in Tripura, the area is witnessing increasing disorder and criminal activities.
“An atmosphere of fear has emerged in Dharmanagar. People are being attacked for expressing opposing views,” he alleged. In this backdrop, Sarkar appealed to the people of Dharmanagar to stand against “anarchy, corruption, and misrule.” He also urged voters to elect the Left Front candidate Amitabha Dutta with a decisive mandate.Among others present at the meeting were party leaders including Bijita Nath, Amal Chakraborty, Abhijit Deb, and MLA Shailendra Chandra Nath, along with several senior leaders of the Communist Party of India (Marxist).Concluding his speech, Sarkar said, “Democracy has been undermined, and attempts are being made to curtail people’s voting rights. To overcome this situation, people must turn out in large numbers on polling day and defend their democratic rights.” With such sharp political rhetoric ahead of the by- election, it is evident that the electoral battle in Dharmanagar is set to become even more intense.
