Amarpur, Tripura, 26th of February 2026 : On occasion of International Mother Language Day 2026 Dr. Maharani Hrangkhawl, assistant professor of Khumulwng, has highlighted over the immense significance of international mother language day in building, social integrity, promoting community heritage culture as well as individual personality development. In a commemoration event of international mother language day she has presented an inspiring speech regarding the significant contribution of mother language for every tribe and community. Addressing the people of North East region she said, “The international mother Language Day is significant for promoting linguistic and cultural diversity, multilingualism, and the preservation of endangered languages of North East involving the minority community language worldwide. It had been initiated by Bangladesh and proclaimed by UNESCO in 1999, it honors the 1952 language martyrs who fought for the recognition of Bengali. This day highlights the importance of mother tongue in education, cognitive development, and sustaining cultural heritage.

It acts as a global reminder that 45% of the world’s 7,000+ languages are endangered, advocating for the protection of, and respect for, indigenous and minority languages.

 It emphasizes that using the mother tongue in early schooling improves learning outcomes. With the 2026 theme focusing on youth voices in education, it emphasizes that language is a cornerstone of identity, preserving traditional knowledge, memory, and unique ways of thinking.

It highlights that 40% of the global population lacks access to education in their mother tongue, making this day crucial for promoting inclusive, sustainable, and equitable societies. The day encourages the use of mother tongue, promotes social harmony, and encourages the respect of all linguistic traditions.” Amidst the other distinguished event participants Dr. Devchandra Subba, assistant professor, Sikkim University, Gantok, Dr. Alok Singh, assistant professor, Nehu, Shillong, Vinod Kumar Mishra, coordinator of Bharatiya Bhasha Manch, North Eastern region, education, culture upliftment trust and many others participated in the event.
