Dharmanagar, Tripura, 11th of February, 2026 : A mysterious fire that broke out late at night at the Bagbasa Gram Panchayat office under Jubarajnagar Block in North Tripura has created widespread concern in the area. The devastating blaze, which occurred around midnight on Tuesday, completely gutted the Panchayat office building.

According to preliminary reports, important official documents and furniture worth over ₹10 lakh were destroyed in the fire.Local sources said residents living near the Panchayat office woke up to a loud noise in the middle of the night. On stepping outside, they saw flames engulfing the office building. The matter was immediately reported to Panchayat In-Charge Chittaranjan Debnath and the Dharmanagar Fire Department.Upon receiving the information, a fire engine from the Dharmanagar Fire Service rushed to the spot. Firefighters, with the assistance of local residents, worked for a considerable time before finally bringing the blaze under control. However, by then the entire Panchayat office had been reduced to rubble. Police from Bagbasa Police Station later arrived at the scene and initiated an investigation. Panchayat In-Charge Chittaranjan Debnath, who reached the spot after receiving a phone call from a Panchayat member, stated that he could not confirm the exact cause of the fire. He claimed that all important documents and costly furniture of the Panchayat were completely destroyed.Gram Panchayat Pradhan Babul Debnath also confirmed the incident, saying, “When we arrived after receiving the news, we saw that the entire office had been gutted by fire. The exact cause of the blaze is still unclear.”Preliminary assessment by the Fire Department suggests that the fire may have originated from an electrical short circuit. However, officials stated that nothing can be said conclusively until the investigation is completed. Notably, there had been earlier allegations of theft at the Bagbasa Gram Panchayat office. The incident of fire at the beginning of March has therefore raised several questions in various quarters.

On Wednesday early morning, MLA jadav Lal Nath of Bagbasa Assembly Constituency visited the site. Later, in a social media post, he alleged that miscreants had deliberately set the Panchayat office on fire, resulting in the destruction of all documents. The MLA’s claim has sparked intense speculation in the area. Some local residents who were involved in extinguishing the fire have questioned the allegation. A few residents, speaking on condition of anonymity, said, “If the police conduct a proper investigation and question all concerned, the real truth will come out.” All eyes are now on the investigation being carried out by Bagbasa Police Station to determine the actual cause behind this mysterious fire incident.
