Secretary Of TWD Govt. Of Tripura Inaugurates Bhagwan Birsa Munda Football Tournament 2026.

Agartala, Tripura, 9th of January, 2026 : With the initiative of Tribal Welfare Department Government of Tripura four-day long Bhagwan Birsa Munda Football Tournament 2026 organized at Umakanta Mini Stadium, Agartala, Tripura. The slogan of this year’s football tournament is “Kick for Health, Play for Pride.”

In the presence of many distinguished dignitaries Secretary of Tribal Welfare Department Government of Tripura Dr. K. Sasikumar inaugurated the four-day long Bhagwan Birsa Munda Football Tournament 2026 on Friday (9th January, 2026).

A four-day Bhagwan Birsa Munda Football Tournament 2026 has begun today at Umakanta Mini Stadium and will continue till 12 January.

According to sources, a total of 16 teams comprising students from all eight districts of the state are participating in the tournament. Among them, there are eight teams in the boys’ category and eight teams in the girls’ category. Earlier, the football competition was held at the sub-divisional and district levels.

Secretary of TWD Dr. K. Sasikumar hoisting the flag and releasing peace doves. Thereafter, the guests paid floral tributes to the portrait of Bhagwan Birsa Munda. In the opening match, the West District team vs the Sepahijala District team.

Addressing at the inauguration ceremony of Bhagwan Birsa Munda Football Tournament Secretary of TWD Dr. K. Sasikumar said that said that this event is not just a competition; it will help foster patriotism and unity among the players. He said that earlier the competition had been successfully conducted at the sub-divisional and district levels, and from today the state-level competition has begun. Sports help in shaping personality, he added. He also added that participating in sports is not only about winning; sports build self-confidence and teach discipline. Prior to the inaugural programme, the players took part in a march-past and administered the oath.

In the opening match of the girls’ category, the West District team defeated the Sepahijala team by 4–0 goals. The match was officiated by referee Utpal Chowdhury.

Amidst the distinguished dignitaries there were Additional Director of the Tribal Welfare Department Keshab Kar, Deputy Director Abhijit Reang, Deputy Director Sumitra Debnath and many other distinguished  dignitaries were present in the event.
