Surviving Stroke Isn’t Enough : The High Cost of Recovery In India.

New Delhi, Delhi, 11th of April 2026 : Stroke in India is no longer just a sudden medical emergency—it is increasingly being recognized as a long-term, life-altering condition. While timely medical intervention has significantly improved survival rates, the real struggle often begins after patients are discharged from the hospital. Post-stroke neuro-rehabilitation, which is critical for recovery, remains expensive and largely uncovered by most insurance policies, placing a heavy financial and emotional burden on families.

With rising stroke cases across Mumbai and the rest of the country, healthcare experts are calling for a shift in focus—from merely saving lives to ensuring quality recovery and rehabilitation. According to Dr. Nirmal Surya, President of the Indian Federation of Neurorehabilitation, “India witnesses over 1.25 million new stroke cases every year. While mortality rates have declined, the lack of structured rehabilitation leaves many survivors living with long-term disabilities.”

Echoing this concern, Dr. Abhishek Srivastava, Neuro-rehabilitation specialist at Kokilaben Hospital, says, “Recovery after a stroke is a prolonged process that requires continuous therapy, caregiving, and expert supervision. However, when such treatments are not covered under insurance, it creates a significant financial strain on families already coping with emotional stress.”

Emerging technologies such as tele-neurorehabilitation, robotics, brain stimulation, and AI-driven therapies offer new hope. However, their accessibility remains limited. Experts emphasize that integrating post-stroke care into insurance coverage and expanding affordable rehabilitation services could transform outcomes—helping survivors not just live, but regain independence and dignity in their daily lives.
