Agartala, Tripura, 9th of January, 2026 : A two day long workshop cum training programme under the PM-USHA funded on Gender Equity and Inclusion initiatives has been concluded successfully in Government Degree College, Khumulwng in West Tripura. The programme was organized by the GDC history department with the objective of empowering students, particularly girl students, by enhancing awareness and skills related to personal safety, health, and hygienic practices.

The inaugural session was presided over by Dr. Bhupendra Debbarma, Principal-in- Charge, GDC Khumulwng. In his presidential address, he emphasized the importance of equipping oneself with essential life-saving skills such as swimming and self- defence, along with maintaining good health and hygiene in everyday life. He highlighted that physical preparedness and health consciousness play a crucial role in building confidence and resilience among students.
The programme was graced by Sri Ganesh Debbarma, MDC, TTAADC, Khumulwng, West Tripura, as the Chief Guest. In his address, he strongly stressed the need for learning self-defence techniques, especially for girl students. He observed that while in earlier times people were often afraid of the dead, spirits, and ghosts, in the present-day people are increasingly afraid of other people. In this context, he underlined that self-defence training has become a necessity rather than a choice, and urged girl to equip themselves with self-defence techniques to ensure their personal safety and independence. The inaugural programme commenced with the felicitation of the dignitaries through the traditional offering of Risa, presentation of mementos, and floral bouquets. This was followed by the watering of a sapling, symbolising health, hygiene, environmental consciousness, and sustainable living.
Dr. Jekap Halam, Assistant Professor and Head (i/c), Department of Philosophy, and Programme Coordinator, extended a warm welcome to the dignitaries, resource persons, faculty members, and participants. In his welcome address, he highlighted the significance of Gender Equity and Inclusion initiatives in higher education and expressed hope that the programme would create lasting awareness and positive behavioural change among students. Smt. Tapati Bhattacharya, Senior Faculty cum Joint T.C. Secretary addressed the gathering and emphasized the importance of maintaining personal health and hygiene as fundamental aspects of a disciplined and healthy life. She stressed that proper hygiene practices are essential for physical well-being as well as mental and social health.
The session also featured an address by Sri Daniel Debbarma, Assistant Professor, Department of Education, GDC Khumulwng, who emphasized the importance of cultivating healthy habits such as getting adequate sleep, maintaining clean nails, drinking safe and clean water, and following basic hygiene practices in daily life. The vote of thanks was proposed by Smt. Rupa Banik, Senior Faculty, Department of Philosophy, GDC Khumulwng, who expressed her sincere gratitude to the dignitaries, resource persons, college administration, organizing committee, faculty members, and students for their cooperation and support in making the programme a success.
The inaugural session was smoothly anchored by Sri Rabindra Debbarma, Assistant Professor, Department of Kokborok, GDC Khumulwng, ensuring effective coordination throughout the programme. Following the inaugural session, the technical session was conducted under the chairpersonship of Dr. Archita Gupta, Assistant Professor, Department of English, GDC Khumulwng. The session featured Dr. Shanti Kumari Debbarma, Assistant Professor (MD, MS), Agartala Medical College & GB Pant Hospital, as the resource person.
