Udaipur, Tripura, 9th of December, 2024 : The 19th State-Level Wangala Festival, celebrating the rich traditions of the Garo community, commenced on 7 December at Natintilla, Udaipur. It was organized by the Udaipur Sub-Divisional Administration, Tripura Garo Union and the Department of Information and Cultural Affairs. Inaugurating the festival, Finance Minister Pranjit Singh Roy highlighted the significance of Wangala as the main festival of the Garo community, stating that it represents unity and togetherness, bringing people from various castes and ethnicities together. The Garo community worships their clan deity through the Wangala festival. He emphasized the state government’s ongoing efforts under the leadership of Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha to protect and promote the culture of Janjati communities and ensure their overall development. Tribal Welfare Minister Bikash Debbarma, the chief guest, applauded the Wangala festival as a platform to celebrate and preserve the unique cultural traditions of the Garo community. He underlined the government’s initiatives to support the cultural and socio-economic development of indigenous communities.
The festival was graced by the presence of several dignitaries, including MLA Abhishek Debroy, chairman of the Mella committee, who emphasized the declaration of Janjati areas as Aspirational Blocks for development.MLA Jitendra Majumdar also spoke on the occasion. Chairperson of Udaipur Municipality Shital Chandra Majumder, Chairman of Matabari Panchayat Samiti Shilpi Rani Das and Deputy Director of the Information and Cultural Affairs Department Ajay Dey were also present. Tripura Garo Union General Secretary Pintu Chandra Ghaghra delivered the welcome address, while Tripura Garo Union President Subhash Marak presided over the event. A total of nine exhibition stalls were set up. Cultural programs featured artistes from both within and outside Tripura, showcasing the diverse artistic talents of the region. Guests also unveiled commemorative souvenirs marking the festival.
