Bengaluru, Karnataka, 14th of May 2026 : In a remarkable demonstration of advanced transplant expertise and multidisciplinary care, doctors at Fortis Hospital Bannerghatta Road successfully performed a highly complex robot-assisted kidney transplant on a 51-year-old Supreme Court Judge from Moroto, Uganda who was battling advanced kidney disease and was severely immunocompromised due to Retrovirus positive status. The challenging procedure was led by Dr. Mohan Keshavamurthy and supported by a multidisciplinary team of specialists, underscoring Fortis’ expertise in managing high-risk transplant cases through advanced robotic technology and coordinated clinical care.

The patient had been battling multiple serious health conditions, including Stage V chronic kidney disease, hypertension, diabetes and Retrovirus positive status. Further adding to the complexity, he had a history of multiple blood transfusions, significantly increasing the risk of organ rejection and making the transplant exceptionally challenging. Owing to the high-risk of his condition, the patient had previously consulted several hospitals where he was deemed unsuitable for transplant surgery before eventually being referred to Fortis Bannerghatta Road for advanced transplant care. Ahead of the procedure, the multidisciplinary medical team at Fortis implemented a meticulously planned pre-transplant treatment protocol aimed at optimising his condition, prepare his body to receive the donor kidney and minimise the chances of rejection, paving the way for the successful surgery.
He subsequently underwent a robot-assisted, minimally invasive kidney transplant, with his biological sister serving as the donor. The donor surgery was also performed using a robot-assisted minimally invasive approach, enabling greater precision and faster recovery for both donor and recipient. Following the transplant, the patient was closely monitored by a multidisciplinary team comprising transplant surgeons, nephrologists, infectious disease specialists and critical care experts. He showed an excellent post-operative recovery, with the transplanted kidney demonstrating strong and stable function. The patient was discharged in stable condition within a week of the surgery and was advised regular follow-up for continued monitoring and long-term care.
Giving details of the case, Dr. Mohan Keshavamurthy, Principal Director, Renal Sciences, Fortis Hospitals, Bengaluru said, “Performing a kidney transplant in a patient with multiple high-risk conditions, including Retrovirus positive, requires extensive planning, precision, and coordinated multidisciplinary care. Considering the patient’s condition, the surgery was performed under Fortis’ TREAT (Total Robot Enabled and Assisted Transplant)programme, wherein simultaneous robot-assisted surgery is carried out for both the donor and recipient with minimal physical contact. This minimally invasive approach helped reduce the risk of infection, enabled greater surgical precision, and supported faster recovery. This case highlights how advanced transplant care can successfully treat even highly complex patients.”
Dr. Manjunath S, Senior Consultant – Nephrology & Transplant Physician, Fortis Hospitals, Bengaluru, said, “Managing a kidney transplant in a severely immunocompromised patient requires highly specialized medical care before and after surgery. In this case, careful pre-transplant preparation, strict infection-control measures, personalized treatment protocols, and close post-transplant monitoring played a crucial role in ensuring a successful outcome. The patient responded very well to the multidisciplinary treatment approach, and the transplanted kidney showed excellent function after the surgery.”
Sharing his experience, the patient said, “Travelling to another country for treatment was not an easy decision for me and my family. However, from the very beginning, the doctors and staff at Fortis gave me confidence and hope. They supported me throughout the journey and ensured I was comfortable at every stage. I am deeply grateful for the successful treatment and the care I received.”
Mr. Gautham CB, Facility Director, Fortis Hospital Bannerghatta Road, said, “This successful transplant reflects Fortis Bannerghatta Road’s strong expertise in handling highly complex and high-risk cases through advanced technology and collaborative care. We remain committed to delivering world-class healthcare and clinical excellence for patients from India and across the globe.”j
