Dharmanagar, Tripura, 30th of January, 2026 : As part of the statewide “Save MGNREGA” programme, a four-hour-long sit-in demonstration was organised on Friday by the 56 No. Dharmanagar Block Congress Committee, following directives from the Tripura Pradesh Congress. The protest was held demanding the protection and proper implementation of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) scheme.

A large number of Congress workers and supporters actively participated in the peaceful demonstration, raising slogans and holding placards in support of MGNREGA and the rights of rural labourers. The protest aimed to draw the attention of both the central and state governments to what the party described as the gradual weakening of the scheme. Addressing the gathering, speakers said that the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi continue to inspire the path of justice, truth, and peace, and that the Congress has always fought to safeguard the rights of common people based on those principles. T
hey alleged that due to the indifference and flawed policies of the present central and state governments, the MGNREGA scheme is on the verge of collapse. Issues such as irregular availability of work, non-payment or delayed payment of wages, and lack of transparency in project implementation have caused severe hardship for rural wage earners, they claimed.

Tripura Pradesh Congress Secretary Chayan Bhattacharjee who was present at the programme, stated that MGNREGA is not merely an employment scheme but the backbone of the rural economy. He warned that any weakening of the scheme would directly affect the poorest sections of rural society. He urged the government to immediately increase budgetary allocation for MGNREGA, clear pending wage payments without delay, and ensure transparency in the execution of projects.Former Block President Parimal Chakraborty, Block President Subal Goswami, and Dharmanagar District Congress General Secretary Sujan Nath Chowdhury also addressed the sit-in. They unanimously stressed that strengthening MGNREGA has become an urgent necessity to protect the livelihood of rural people. The speakers asserted that the Congress would continue its movement against any attempt to weaken the scheme for political reasons. Several other Congress leaders, workers, and supporters were present during the programme. Through this peaceful sit-in demonstration, the Congress leadership sought to draw the government’s attention to the plight of rural workers and reiterated its commitment to stand beside them while demanding the protection of the MGNREGA scheme.
