Hon’ble Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi inaugurated the new terminal building of the Lokapriya Gopinath Bardoloi International Airport in Guwahati, Assam, on 20th December, 2025.

LGBIA Terminal 2 through Assam’s soul—where bamboo-inspired interiors, the aroma of Assam’s tea gardens, and the echoes of lush safaris home to rhinos and elephants create a sensory experience unlike any other. The design will recreate the serenity of a bamboo forest in bloom, merging nature with modernity.

The New Terminal Building draws inspiration from Assam’s biodiversity and cultural heritage, under the theme Bamboo Orchids.

Spread over nearly 1.4 lakh square metres, the New Terminal Building is designed to handle up to 1.3 crore passengers annually.

According to source raw materials were also procured from Tripura.

Assam’s rich biodiversity, represented by over 600 orchid species, inspires the airport’s elegance, while bamboo symbolises strength and sustainability and forms the backbone of its eco-friendly design. These natural elements have been seamlessly integrated into the structure, creating a lightweight architectural masterpiece that blends harmoniously with the surrounding environment.

As India ascends from the world’s 7th to the 3rd largest aviation market by 2024-25, LGBI Airport stands poised to lead this transformation. Currently ranked India’s 9th busiest airport, it is primed for exponential growth.

• A future-ready 1,40,000 sq. m terminal, designed to accommodate 13.1 million passengers annually and handle 3,100 peak-hour passengers.

The terminal features bamboo-inspired interiors using approximately 140 metric tonnes of locally sourced bamboo, orchid-themed columns, traditional Assamese Jhapi motifs (the iconic conical headgear), Kaziranga-inspired landscapes and the rhinoceros as a symbol of resilience and strength.

The Sky Forest Arrival Experience

Arriving passengers pass through a unique Sky Forest featuring over 100,000 plants across 100 native species, creating an immersive, forest-like arrival experience.

Redefining Passenger Convenience

For the first time in India, passengers can check in at the parking area and arrival forecourt, eliminating the need to carry baggage into the terminal.

Digital-First, Contactless Travel

The terminal integrates DigiYatra-enabled electronic gates, full-body scanners, self-bag drop counters, automated baggage handling systems, automated tray retrieval systems and fast-track immigration facilities for eligible passengers.

Intelligent Airport Operations

LGBIA operates on Adani Airports’ Aviio digital platform and a state-of-the-art Airport Operations Control Centre (AOCC), enabling real-time decision-making, predictive analytics and operational efficiency.

Sustainability at the Core

As of FY 2024–25, Guwahati Airport has achieved a passenger traffic milestone of 6.50 million passengers per annum (MPPA). The newly completed Integrated Terminal 2 Building (NITB) has been designed to handle 13.1 MPPA, supported by comprehensive upgrades to airfields, aprons, taxiways and the runway, significantly enhancing operational capacity.

The overall airport project represents an investment of n5,000 crore, including n1,000 crore

earmarked for Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facilities, reinforcing Guwahati’s long-term aviation and engineering capabilities.

Future development plans include the establishment of integrated domestic and international cargo facilities and further expansion of MRO infrastructure, strengthening regional supply chains and accelerating economic growth across the Northeast.

A major highlight in the airfield area was a special demonstration of the fire rescue and firefighting systems. To handle emergency situations, state-of-the-art “Panther” Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) vehicle—costing approximately ₹15 crore—have been deployed. These vehicles store a specific amount of foam mixed with 5,000 liters of water. They can spray water or foam up to a height of nearly 10 meters while moving. The maximum speed of these vehicles is 140 km/h. Along with Assam, the terminal’s design also highlights the biodiversity of the Northeast.

Celebrating Regional Heritage Through Non-Aero Development

The new terminal showcases Assam’s cultural identity through curated retail, F&B; and the Airport Village. Local brands such as Repose, Goodwyn Tea and Golden Threads of Assam highlight regional flavours and handloom traditions. Amchong Tea and an upcoming Assamese cuisine restaurant bring authentic Northeastern tastes to travellers. The Airport Village features J14, The Lahe Life and the iconic Bagan restaurant, each inspired by Assam’s folklore, cuisine, landscapesand cultural heritage—ensuring every traveller experiences the  true spirit of the state.

Fifteen journalists from the Eight Northeastern states on Tuesday (22nd September, 2026) visited the Lokapriya Gopinath Bardoloi International Airport Terminal (T2) facility and interacted with officials from its management team.
