Dharmanagar, Tripura, 7th of March, 2026 : “The city shines, but there are no toilets! Severe hardship in Dharmanagar due to the negligence of the Municipal Council.”The city is said to be modernizing—roads are clean and bright, lights are shining everywhere, and the drumbeat of development is being sounded loudly. But standing on the ground, ordinary people are raising a serious question: if the administration fails to meet even the most basic needs, then what is the meaning of this development? In the commercial town of Dharmanagar in North Tripura, the shortage of public toilets has now taken a serious turn. For this crisis, the Dharmanagar Municipal Council is being directly blamed. As the district headquarters of North Tripura, thousands of people visit Dharmanagar every day for various purposes. Markets, offices, banks, and medical facilities keep the town crowded from morning till evening. However, a basic facility like a public toilet has become almost a luxury here. The only main reliance is a toilet operated by the Dharmanagar Municipal Council located on Central Road, the heart of the town. But according to local residents, the toilet remains closed most of the time and is not even open for 10 days in a month. With the doors locked, common people are left helpless.Local shopkeepers and business owners are the worst affected. With the toilet remaining closed for days, many are forced to relieve themselves beside open drains in public. This not only pollutes the environment but also creates an extremely uncomfortable and embarrassing situation for pedestrians, especially women and children.

People who come from rural areas to shop in the town face even greater hardship. When they cannot find a toilet in times of need, many are forced to endure the discomfort for long periods. Some even have to ignore social embarrassment and choose unhygienic and unsafe places.Residents of the town are now questioning: when the government repeatedly claims success under the Swachh Bharat Mission, why is the situation so poor in an important town like Dharmanagar?Local people are demanding that adequate and modern public toilets be constructed immediately at important intersections and crowded areas of the town. At the same time, they insist that the municipal toilet on Central Road should remain open daily at fixed hours and be properly cleaned and maintained.

Otherwise, this mismanagement will not only cause inconvenience but may also become a serious threat to public health, say concerned citizens. Now the question remains: after this reality has come to light, will the Dharmanagar Municipal Council finally wake up, or will this basic problem of the people continue to remain hidden behind the glitter of development?
