Mother Tongue Is The Axis Of Civilization And Culture.

Agartala, Tripura, 11th of March, 2026 : A grand opening of the two-day national seminar on the theme ‘Mother Tongue: Carrier of Culture and Identity’ was held today under the joint auspices of the Faculty of Literature, Tripura University, and the Bharatiya Bhasha Manch. In the inaugural session organized at the Maharaja Bir Bikram Shatabarsiki Auditorium, academicians and experts engaged in a profound discussion regarding the conservation and cultural significance of mother tongues.

The program commenced with the lighting of the lamp by the guests and the singing of ‘Vande Mataram’. This was followed by the rendition of the University Anthem. Prof. Milan Rani Jamatia, Head of the Hindi Department, extended a traditional welcome to all visiting guests and presented the outline of the seminar in her welcome address. Prof. Vinod Kumar Mishra, Dean of the Faculty of Literature at Tripura University, delivered the keynote address. In his speech, he described the mother tongue as the foundation of identity and personality, stating that without language, the entire world is desolate.

On this occasion, Prof. Yogesh Pratap Singh, Honorable Vice-Chancellor of the National Law University, Agartala, and Prof. Bibhas Deb, Honorable Vice-Chancellor of Maharaja Bir Bikram University, shared their thoughts as distinguished speakers. Prof. Yogesh Pratap Singh emphasized the importance of the mother tongue in the judiciary. He remarked that if the significance we are giving to this issue now had been initiated at the time of independence, the picture of India today would have been different. He noted that receiving education in another language instead of one’s mother tongue is an extremely difficult task. Prof. Bibhas Deb stressed the necessity of the mother tongue in education and the need for its promotion in modern times. While describing the importance of his mother tongue, Assamese, he mentioned that the language has produced many classic works and several saints and great poets. He also highlighted that the Assamese language has now been included in the list of classical languages of India.

The Chief Guest, Shri A. Vinod, National Coordinator of Shiksha Sanskriti Utthan Nyas, New Delhi, stated that the mother tongue is not merely a medium of communication but a carrier of culture. Describing its importance, he mentioned that the Bharatiya Bhasha Manch of the Shiksha Sanskriti Utthan Nyas works specifically towards this goal. The forum not only works to create awareness for the upliftment of Indian languages across the country but also organizes ‘Bhasha Sangams’ (language meets) from time to time.

Presiding over the session, Prof. Shyamal Das, Honorable Vice-Chancellor of Tripura University, reiterated the commitment to strengthening Indian languages within the educational framework. In a poetic style, he described the historical journey and emotional depth of his mother tongue, ‘Bengali’, and recited a self-composed poem. The session concluded with a vote of thanks by Prof. Debraj Panigrahi, and the proceedings were efficiently conducted by Dr. Jai Saha. Professors from all departments, researchers, and students were present in large numbers on this occasion
