Dharmanagar, Tripura, 24th of April 2026 : Allegations of widespread illegal gambling during the traditional Charak fair have prompted the Dharmanagar Press Club to raise strong concerns in North Tripura district. Seeking immediate intervention to curb this growing social menace, the organization has approached the Superintendent of Police (SP). On Friday, April 24, a delegation from the Press Club submitted a memorandum to the district SP, highlighting that unscrupulous groups are allegedly running large-scale gambling operations—both openly and covertly—across various parts of the district during the Charak Puja and fair.

According to the representatives, daily wage earners and especially youth are being drawn into gambling, often losing their hard-earned money. This has led to rising domestic conflicts and is adversely affecting the overall social environment. More concerning are allegations that such activities are taking place even in the presence of police in certain areas, fueling public anger. After submitting the memorandum, a Press Club official stated that such illegal practices during festive occasions are unacceptable.
To maintain administrative credibility and prevent youth from going astray, they have demanded strict police surveillance at every fairground. It now remains to be seen how swiftly and firmly the North Tripura district police administration responds to these allegations. The general public is expecting decisive action in the interest of society.
