Dharmanagar, Tripura, 19th of May 2026 : Mother Language Protection Day was observed with deep respect and solemnity today at the Vivekananda Sardha Shatabarshiki Bhavan in Dharmanagar under the initiative of the Information and Cultural Affairs Department. The programme began at 12:30 PM with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp.

On the occasion, tribute was paid to the 11 language martyrs who sacrificed their lives on May 19, 1961, at Silchar Railway Station while fighting to protect the dignity of the Bengali language. Among the martyrs were 16-year-old braveheart Kamala Bhattacharjee, Sukomal Purkayastha, Chandicharan Sutradhar, Sunil Sarkar, Satyendra Deb, Hitesh Biswas, Tarani Debnath, Birendra Sutradhar, Kanailal Niyogi, Kumudranjan Das, and Sachindra Paul. A one-minute silence was observed in their memory.
The programme was attended by Dharmanagar MLA Jahar Chakraborty as the chief guest. Other dignitaries present on the stage included Chairperson of Dharmanagar Municipal Council Mitali Rani Das (Sen), District Education Officer Firanjan Tripura, Sabhadhipati Aparna Nath, and Assistant Director of the District Information and Cultural Affairs Department Ripon Chakma.The speakers highlighted the history of the language movement, the sacrifice of the 11 martyrs, and the importance of preserving the mother tongue among the younger generation.
MLA Jahar Chakraborty stated that the language martyrs who laid down their lives for their language are a matter of pride for society, and urged the younger generation to be more sincere in practising and preserving their mother tongue.As part of the observance, around 40 meritorious students and young writers from Dharmanagar were felicitated and awarded in recognition of their contributions to literature and language studies.The entire programme was conducted smoothly under the supervision of the Information and Cultural Affairs Department.
