Guwahati, Assam, 19th of May 2026 : Legendary dramatist, and recipient of both the Sahitya Akademi and Sangeet Natak Akademi awards, Dr. Arun Sarma is recognised as a pioneer of Assamese Absurd Theatre. He played a crucial role in the development of Assamese dramatic literature, not only through his work in Absurd Theatre but also by introducing modern European avant-garde theatrical forms, such as expressionism, to local audiences. Among Dr. Sarma’s most widely discussed dramatic works, Anupam Andhar (translated as Dark is Beautiful) is a significant contemporary Assamese play, first published in 2013. It is distinguished as one of the last major full-length scripts of his remarkable literary career.

In homage to this illustrious playwright, the Guwahati Sishu Natya Vidyalaya (GSNV), a prominent local drama institution, is scheduled to stage Anupam Andhar, one of his unparalleled theatrical works, on the 23rd and 24th of May at the Surjya Club auditorium in Guwahati. This theatrical production, directed and conceptualised by Manik Roy — a prominent figure in Assamese theatre and the founder of GSNV, showcases emerging actors Mriganga and Atrayee.
In keeping with Dr. Arun Sarma’s distinctive style, the play diverges from conventional commercial formats to delve into profound existential complexities, interpersonal connections, and unique social issues. Following the playwright’s demise, special performances of Anupam Andhar are regularly presented in honour of his legacy by numerous children’s and youth theatre groups in Northeast India. Particularly noteworthy are the productions by the Guwahati Sishu Natya Vidyalaya, under the guidance of Manik Roy
