Dharmanagar, Tripura, 28th of May 2026 : Acting on a tip-off, the Special Police Branch carried out a major operation on Thursday in Panisagar subdivision of North Tripura and seized a huge quantity of illegal Burmese cigarettes. Two persons, including the driver of the vehicle, were detained in connection with the incident.According to police sources, information was received that a vehicle bearing registration number WB893093 was transporting illegal goods. Based on the intelligence input, police intercepted the vehicle at a naka checkpoint in Panisagar subdivision.

During the search, officers initially found cartons loaded with soft drinks. However, upon conducting a more detailed inspection, police discovered 40 cartons of Burmese cigarettes hidden beneath the soft drink cartons.Among the seized cigarettes, two brands were identified — “Mont” and “Petron.” Police detained the two occupants of the vehicle. The accused have been identified as Jewel Mia, a resident of Kumarghat, and Bijoy Mog, a resident of Ambassa.Preliminary investigation revealed that the vehicle was travelling from Bhanga in Assam to Agartala.
According to the investigating officer, Ashutosh Sharma, the estimated black-market value of the seized Burmese cigarettes is around ₹30 lakh.Following the seizure, police have started interrogating the two detainees. Authorities are also investigating whether more people are involved in the smuggling racket. The investigation is currently ongoing.
