Dharmanagar, Tripura, 16th of June 2026 : The Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) organized a protest demonstration and mass deputation in Dharmanagar against the eviction of hawkers and small traders from the railway station areas of Sealdah, Dum Dum, and Jadavpur without proper rehabilitation on Monday (15th June, 2026). The protest also condemned alleged police harassment and arrests. The programme was part of a nationwide protest call given by the central committee of CITU.

Around 12 noon, CITU workers and supporters gathered in front of the cpim Dharmanagar Sub -Divisional Office. A protest rally was then taken out through various parts of the town before reaching Dharmanagar Railway Station. Later, a delegation submitted a memorandum to the Station Manager of Dharmanagar Railway Station. In the memorandum, the protesters demanded an immediate halt to eviction drives against hawkers and small traders, the release of those arrested, and the implementation of a concrete rehabilitation plan for those affected.

Addressing the gathering, speakers alleged that hawkers and small traders who have been earning their livelihoods in railway station areas for many years are being evicted without any alternative arrangements. They stated that such actions have pushed many families into severe financial uncertainty by depriving them of their source of income. The speakers further argued that these measures are contrary to humanitarian values and detrimental to the interests of working-class people.

Among those present at the programme were CPI(M) State Secretariat member Amitabh Dutta, North District Secretary Abhijit Dey, Sub-Divisional Secretary Ratan Roy, along with district and sub -divisional leaders of CITU and members of various labour organizations. The protesters warned that if their demands are not met promptly, labour organizations will launch larger mass movements in the coming days.
