Dharmanagar, Tripura, 6th of July 2026 : The Anandabazar check post, located under Dharmanagar Subdivision in North Tripura district, has allegedly become a major corridor for illegal smuggling activities. According to the report, prohibited narcotics and illegal Burmese cigarettes are being transported through the check post to different parts of the state on a daily basis. Despite these alleged activities taking place in plain sight, local residents claim that law enforcement has failed to take effective action, leading to growing public dissatisfaction.

Local sources have made serious allegations that a police constable posted at the Anandabazar check post is playing a central role in facilitating the smuggling network. It is alleged that vehicles carrying contraband are allowed to pass after the payment of commissions amounting to several thousand rupees per vehicle. The report further claims that senior officials, including the Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) and the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Dharmanagar Police Station, are aware of the situation but have not intervened. It also alleges that the constable acts as a trusted intermediary who regularly distributes illicit payments within the police hierarchy. These allegations have not been independently verified. The report further alleges that the illegal trade in Burmese cigarettes and narcotics is controlled by an organized syndicate involving alleged smugglers from Damchhara and Tilthai, along with an influential businessman from Ramnagar. It also claims that some individuals associated with the media are involved in these activities.
According to the allegations, certain people identifying themselves as journalists are engaged in brokering contraband deals, collecting illegal payments from gambling operators, or assisting in the movement of smuggled goods. These claims have not been substantiated by official evidence.Residents have reportedly submitted complaints to the authorities, but they allege that no significant legal action has been taken against those involved. The report attributes this inaction to alleged close ties between some police officials and members of the smuggling network. At the same time, residents claim that incidents of theft and burglary have been increasing across Dharmanagar.
Businesses and homes are reportedly being targeted, with thieves allegedly using gas cutters to break into shops or entering houses by cutting through roofs and stealing valuables. The report also questions the effectiveness of police investigations. It alleges that despite police claiming to know the identities of certain criminals, arrests have not been made, leaving residents feeling insecure and frustrated.Concerns have also been raised over nighttime policing.
According to the report, a controversial police officer, who had previously been transferred over allegations of misconduct, has allegedly been retained at Dharmanagar Police Station by a senior officer and continues to handle important investigations. The report further claims that during night patrols, the officer spends more time at the Anandabazar check post than patrolling the town. It also repeats earlier allegations of financial links between the officer and smugglers, although these allegations remain unverified. The report concludes by alleging that the law enforcement system in Dharmanagar has significantly deteriorated. It warns that unless decisive action is taken to address corruption, smuggling, and the decline in law and order, growing public anger could eventually lead to widespread protests.
