Bangalore, Karnataka, 2nd of August, 2026 : Marking a landmark achievement in the evolution of robotic-assisted surgery in India, Fortis Hospital, Bannerghatta Road has become the fastest hospital in the country to complete 3000 robot-assisted surgeries using the advanced Da Vinci Xi surgical system. This milestone reflects the hospital’s unwavering commitment to clinical excellence, surgical innovation, and delivering superior patient outcomes across multiple specialties. The occasion was commemorated at a special ceremony held at The Lalit Ashok, Bengaluru, in the distinguished presence of Hon’ble Minister for Health & Family Welfare, Government of Karnataka, Shri U.T. Khader, who graced the event as the Chief Guest.
Since the launch of its robotic surgery programme in 2018, the hospital has established one of India’s most comprehensive robotic surgery programmes, spanning 12 specialties, including Urology, Kidney Transplantation, Gynaecology, Surgical Oncology, Gastrointestinal Surgery, Bariatric Surgery, Cardiac Surgery and ENT among others. Fortis Bannerghatta is among the few hospitals in India to be equipped with two da Vinci Xi robotic surgical systems under one roof, enabling surgeons to perform increasingly complex procedures with greater precision. The hospital has also established India’s first-of-its-kind TREAT (Total Robot Enabled and Assisted Transplant) Programme, an advanced robotic kidney transplant initiative that integrates robotic technology across both donor and recipient procedures.
Demonstrating the impact of its robotic surgery programme, the hospital recently treated Mr. Pattabhiraman Venkatraman, a 77-year-old gentleman who approached Fortis Hospital, Bannerghatta with persistent urinary problems. Following a detailed evaluation, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Despite his advanced age and multiple co-existing health conditions, he successfully underwent robot-assisted radical prostatectomy led by Dr. Mohan Keshavamurthy and his team. The procedure involved the complete removal of the cancerous prostate gland and nearby lymph nodes through a minimally invasive approach. He recovered well and was discharged in a stable condition.
Highlighting the hospital’s expertise in robotic gynaecological surgery, the hospital also successfully treated Mrs. Vaishnavi Vinay, a 39-year-old woman who had been suffering from severe menstrual pain and abnormal bleeding that affected her daily life. After conservative medical treatment failed to provide relief, she underwent robot-assisted hysterectomy led by Dr Rubina Shanawaz and her team, during which the uterus and both fallopian tubes were removed while preserving both ovaries. The minimally invasive procedure resulted in less pain, minimal blood loss and a quicker recovery, allowing her to return to her normal routine sooner.
Further showcasing the hospital’s expertise in advanced minimally invasive cardiac surgery, Mr. Azim Surendra Dattani, a 49-year-old man from Tanzania, approached Fortis Hospital, Bannerghatta, with complaints of recurring chest pain. Following evaluation, he was diagnosed with complex coronary artery disease and underwent minimally invasive coronary artery bypass surgery (CABG) involving three grafts through small incisions, led by Dr. Sudarshan GT,and his team.The advanced approach helped reduce surgical trauma, minimise blood loss and support faster recovery. He recovered well and was discharged in a stable condition, demonstrating how minimally invasive cardiac surgery is helping patients recover sooner while delivering excellent clinical outcomes.
