Dharmanagar, Tripura, 6th of August, 2026 : A child care centre (crèche) located in the Hafflong Tea Estate under Dharmanagar subdivision of North Tripura has remained closed for the past three years, raising serious concerns about the safety and nutrition of children from tea workers’ families.
According to local tea workers, the prolonged closure has left them without a reliable place to keep their young children while they work in the tea garden. As a result, many children are also being deprived of regular nutritious meals that were once provided by the centre.
The crèche was established in 2012 using funds from the Local Area Development Fund of the then MLA, Ramendra Chandra Debnath. It was set up to provide a safe environment for the children of working mothers employed in the tea estate. The centre was managed by the voluntary organization Sanghadeep under government supervision and functioned efficiently for several years. Around 40 to 45 children attended the centre daily, where they received proper care and nutritious food.
Local sources said that after the government took over the management of the centre, several administrative issues emerged. Salaries of caregivers and other staff remained unpaid for a long period, forcing them to resign one after another. Since then, the crèche has remained completely non-functional.
Today, the building stands abandoned and overgrown with weeds. Tea workers allege that the tea estate management has also failed to provide any alternative child care facility. As a result, mothers are forced to leave for work every day while worrying about the safety and well-being of their children.
Tea workers have demanded the immediate reopening of the child care centre. They believe that restoring its services would not only ensure a safe environment for their children but also revive the provision of nutritious meals, which are essential for the welfare of tea workers’ families.
