Agartala, Tripura, 10th of August, 2026 : A programme was organized today at Sukanta Academy to mark the celebration of World Indigenous Peoples’ Day 2026. The theme of this year’s observance was “Indigenous Communities – Guardians of Tripura’s Forest Ecosystem.” The event was jointly organized by the IGDC Cluster Project, SCATFORM Project, and ELEMENT Project under the Forest Department.
Inaugurating the programme, Forest Minister Animesh Debbarma stated that the indigenous people of the state deserve recognition and respect in every sphere of life, as they are among the foremost protectors of forest resources. He emphasized that there exists a deep and harmonious relationship between tribal communities and forest resources. Indigenous communities play a vital role in the conservation and sustainable management of forest ecosystems. He also highlighted the rich heritage, traditions, and cultural practices of Tripura’s tribal people.
Addressing on the occasion, PCCF R. K. Samal elaborated on the significance of World Indigenous Peoples’ Day and highlighted the diverse cultures of Tripura’s 19 tribal communities. Nine distinguished personalities were honoured during the programme for their notable contributions to literature, culture, and social service.
Amidst the distinguished dignitaries there were Bhanumati G., CEO of the SCATFORM Project, K. Sashi Kumar, Secretary to the Government of Tripura, and noted poet and litterateur Bikash Roy Debbarma, among others. Representatives of various Self-Help Groups displayed traditional tribal handicrafts at the event. The programme also featured vibrant cultural performances by tribal artists.
