Agartala, Tripura, 21st of August, 2026 : In order to relieve the consumers of the additional burden of increased power tariff during the 2026-27 financial year, the state government itself will bear it. That means the government has decided to give 100 per cent subsidy on the additional charges caused due to the increased new tariff order. This initiative will benefit more than 10 lakh consumers of the state. Hon’ble Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath informed this at a press conference held at the state secretariat today. He said, the government led by Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha gives utmost priority to the public interest. The government has considered the additional burden on the consumers for the tariff hike and from that consideration this decision to waive the additional charges has come.

The Power Minister said, this decision reflects the present government’s welfare outlook. In the past also due to the increased tariff additional burden came on the consumers. But this government has decided to bear it itself. During the period from 2010-11 to 2017-18, the rate of electricity tariff hike was 116 per cent. That rate of hike has been brought down to 40.42 per cent during the period of 2018-19 to 2026-27 year. Besides, the present government has decided to fully waive the increased tariff.

The Power Minister further informed that the government will bear the entire additional burden emanated due to the 2026-27 TERC approved new tariff order. This subsidy will apply to different categories of consumers. Household, MSME business, farmers, industries will enjoy the subsidy. But the railway traction will not come under this facility. Additionally 15 per cent tariff will remain unchanged for the defence installation, railway, All India Radio, Doordarshan.

To implement this decision the state exchequer will have to spend an additional amount of Rs. 117.13 crore apart from the subsidy of Rs 77.57 crore. That indicates the government has taken additional financial responsibility to protect the interest of common people. This is the first time in the state that the government is bearing the entire additional electricity tariff. He also informed that those who have already paid the

bills as per the increased tariff rate, their additional payment will be returned in a systematic manner. This subsidy will be applicable from May, 2026 onward. For those who have paid the hiked tariff, their additional payment will be adjusted with their bills for September, October and November.

The Power Minister informed, electricity tariff is regulated by an autonomous body called Tripura Electricity Regulatory Commission (TERC). As per the Power Act 2003 the Commission fixes the electricity tariff from time to time. He said, keeping the interest of consumers in mind, the government over the last several years has tried to keep the tariff under control. Changes have occurred in the international market, power production and purchase scenario and other related issues. In view of that the changes made in the tariff structure has caused additional burden on the consumers, the government has realised this. The state government is also considering the matter of hike in the fixed charge. He said, the government under the leadership of Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha easily takes into account the woes of common people and takes decisions and actions accordingly. Such responsiveness of the government has been reflected in this decision on power tariffs. The benefit of this decision will also be reflected in the upcoming bills of the already paid accounts. He said, this decision is an expression of the government’s consumer-friendly and people-friendly policy.
