Accused Sentenced To 20 Years’ Rigorous Imprisonment In POCSO Case.

Dharmanagar, Tripura, 30th of August, 2026 : The Special POCSO Court has sentenced an accused to 20 years’ rigorous imprisonment in connection with a POCSO case involving the alleged sexual abuse of a minor girl in Kanchanpur, North Tripura. The court has also imposed a fine of ₹10,000 on the accused. In default of payment, the accused will have to undergo an additional six months of imprisonment. The court also awarded a further three months’ imprisonment under Section 506 of the Indian Penal Code.

According to court sources, the incident dates back to 2022. It was alleged that a minor girl staying in the hostel of St. Peter’s School in Kanchanpur subdivision was sexually abused on multiple occasions. Following the incident, a case was registered at Kanchanpur Police Station on November 21, 2022. The case was registered under Case No. 2022/64. After completion of the investigation, the matter was placed before the Special POCSO Court for trial, where it was registered as Special POCSO 07/23.The trial continued for a considerable period, with hearings and examination of witnesses taking place over time. A total of 16 prosecution witnesses were examined in the case. After examining the evidence and relevant documents,

Special POCSO Court Judge Sudipta Chowdhury found the accused guilty and pronounced the sentence.The verdict brings an important conclusion to the long-running legal proceedings in the case. The judgment is being viewed as a significant step toward protecting minors and ensuring accountability in cases involving sexual offences against children.The case was conducted on behalf of the prosecution by advocate Sudarshan Sharma. Following the verdict, he said that ensuring the safety and protection of children and minors is the responsibility of everyone in society. He stressed the need for families, educational institutions and society as a whole to remain more vigilant and responsible so that such incidents do not recur.

The POCSO Act plays a crucial role in protecting children and minors from sexual offences. The law places emphasis on prompt legal action and bringing offenders to justice when allegations of sexual offences against children arise.The verdict in the Kanchanpur case, delivered after a prolonged trial, is being regarded by concerned sections as an important outcome of the legal process concerning the protection of minors.
