TWJA Submits Six-Point Memorandum To Chief Minister Seeking Journalists’ Rights And Protection.

Dharmanagar, Tripura, 1st of September, 2026 : The North District Committee of the Tripura Working Journalists’ Association (TWJA) submitted a six-point memorandum demanding an end to the long-standing problems and deprivation faced by journalists in the state and seeking protection of their professional rights and social security. On Monday (31st August, 2026), members of the organisation submitted the memorandum, addressed to the Chief Minister, through the District Magistrate of North Tripura.

According to the organisation, journalists play an important role as the fourth pillar of democracy, yet many journalists in the state remain deprived of minimum wages, job security, healthcare and other social security benefits. The organisation alleged that many journalists do not even receive appointment letters, while basic facilities such as a fixed salary structure, leave and Provident Fund are also lacking.The memorandum demands that all government-listed print and electronic media organisations be made legally bound to provide journalists with appointment letters mentioning the applicable pay scale. It also seeks an increase in the journalists’ pension from Rs 10,000 to Rs 25,000, withdrawal of the existing 10-year eligibility requirement for pension after receiving a press accreditation card, and inclusion of journalists’ pensions under the Family Pension scheme as per government rules.

The organisation further demanded implementation of EPF and ESI facilities in all media houses, mandatory festival or Puja bonuses, and the speedy implementation of the previously announced housing scheme, including government accommodation for homeless journalists. It also sought representation for TWJA in various government committees dealing with media-related matters.TWJA North District President Swapan Kumar Das, Secretary Rupak Debnath and other members of the organisation were present during the programme. The organisation’s leadership expressed hope that the government would take prompt and positive steps to address the demands of journalists.
