Pipeline Drinking Water Connections Provided To 6,49,500 Families So Far: Chief Minister Of Tripura Dr. Manik Saha At Assembly.

Agartala, Tripura, 1st of September, 2026 : As of now, 13.50 percent of families still do not have assured drinking water connections. To ensure this across the state, work is underway on 3,264 deep tube wells, 703 stand-post deep tube wells, 3 surface water treatment plants, 1,498 iron removal plants, and 233 innovative projects. This work is to be completed by 2028. In the Assembly, in reply to a calling-attention notice, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha stated this. MLA Shailendra Chandra Nath and MLA Ramu Das had brought the calling-attention notice regarding “ensuring drinking water supply everywhere in hilly/remote areas.” on Monday (31st August, 2026)

Speaking on the discussion on the notice, the Chief Minister said that drinking water is being supplied in the rural areas of the state from various sources such as deep tube wells, stand-post deep tube wells, water treatment plants, and innovative projects. In some scatteredly inhabited hilly areas there is a shortage of water sources; there it is not being possible to install deep tube wells and stand-post deep tube wells. But in all such areas, innovative projects are being built centering on springs, streams, and reservoirs, and further work is ongoing.

He said that before the launch of the Jal Jeevan Mission project on 15 August 2019, only 3.26 percent of rural households in the state had drinking water connections through door-to-door pipelines. At present, out of a total of 7,50,849 families across 606 Gram Panchayats and 587 Village Councils in the state, drinking water connections through pipelines have been provided to 6,49,500 families as of 26 August, that is, 86.50 percent of the work has been completed. It should be noted here that in the ADC area, the total number of families is 3,27,193, of which drinking water connections through pipelines have been provided to 2,70,714 families as of 26 August, that is, 82.74 percent of the work has been completed.

The Chief Minister said that in every Gram Panchayat and Village Committee, a minimum of 1 person has been appointed, making a total of 1,262 local men/women designated as “Jal Jal Mitra,” who are being identified and given multi-skill training for

rural-level water supply and maintenance. So far 777 people have been trained, and the remaining 485 are planned to be trained within the 2026-27 financial year. The extended version of Jal Jeevan Mission i.e. Jal Jeevan Mission 2.0was announced in the 2025-26 financial year. Although timeline for its completion was 2024, the central government has extended the timeline upto December 2028 so that all rural families are covered under Jal Jeevan Mission 2.0.

Notably, for the 2026-27 financial year, the central government has allocated Rs 508.10 crore (90 percent) for Tripura, and correspondingly the state government has allocated Rs 56.46 crore (10 percent), making the total allocated amount for 2026-27 Rs 564.76 crore. This allocated amount is provided in three installments (tri-monthly). The first installment of Rs 122.39 crore has already been sanctioned, and it is expected that the second installment amount will be received by the last week of September 2026. It is hoped that the amount sanctioned in this first installment will be given to those projects where 100 percent of the work has been completed. It is hoped that the central government may allocate further additional funds as needed during the current financial year. With the aim of ensuring easy availability of drinking water for the general public, the department continues to take necessary steps. MLA Shailendra Chandra Nath also spoke on the matter.
