Guwahati, Assam, 14th of September, 2026 : A 14-member media delegation from Uttar Pradesh, comprising journalists from leading media organisations of the state, on Sunday (13th September, 2026) called on the Hon’ble Governor of Assam, Shri Lakshman Prasad Acharya, in Guwahati on the first day of their six-day official visit to Assam and Meghalaya.
The media visit is being organised under a Government-sponsored media outreach initiative of the Press Information Bureau, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India, with the objective of providing journalists from Uttar Pradesh an opportunity to gain first-hand exposure to the developmental initiatives, cultural heritage, natural wealth and socio-economic landscape of the Northeast.
Welcoming the delegation, the Hon’ble Governor expressed his happiness at meeting journalists from Uttar Pradesh outside his home state. Recalling his association with Uttar Pradesh, Shri Acharya said that it was a matter of happiness for him to welcome journalists from his native state to Assam. He said that Assam is known for its warm hospitality and generous people and expressed confidence that the visiting journalists would experience the warmth and hospitality of the people of the state during their tour.
Highlighting Assam’s rich natural, cultural and spiritual heritage, the Governor said that the state is endowed with abundant flora and fauna and has a distinctive cultural identity. He spoke about the significance of Majuli and Umananda, located in the Brahmaputra and holding geographical and spiritual significance.
Shri Acharya said that Assam’s cultural traditions, religious heritage and natural wealth together give the state a unique identity. He encouraged the visiting journalists to explore these diverse facets of Assam during their tour and highlight the state’s developmental progress, cultural richness, spiritual traditions and natural heritage through their respective media platforms. He said that such coverage would help people in Uttar Pradesh gain a better understanding of Assam and its achievements.
The Governor also shared some of the initiatives undertaken during his tenure in Assam such as ‘Assam Governor Varishtha Shikshak Samman Yojana’. Referring to his efforts towards recognising the contribution of teachers across the state in acknowledgement of their invaluable services towards society, he mentioned the initiative of honouring the oldest retired surviving primary school teacher by visiting the later’s residence.
During the interaction, Shri Kripa Shankar Yadav, Additional Director General, Press Information Bureau, North East Zone, briefed the Hon’ble Governor about the six-day itinerary of the visiting journalists and the various places, institutions and developmental initiatives that the delegation would be covering during its visit to Assam and Meghalaya.
The Hon’ble Governor expressed his happiness at hosting the delegation in the Northeast and wished the visiting journalists a meaningful, enriching and fruitful tour.
Earlier in the day, on the first day of their tour, the media delegation interacted with the members of the Gauhati Press Club. The interaction provided an opportunity for the visiting journalists to engage in an informal discussion on the local media landscape of Assam and the Northeast.
The journalists exchanged views on the distinctive features of journalism in the region, the opportunities and challenges before the local media and issues of relevance to the people of Assam and the wider Northeast. The interaction also enabled the visiting journalists to gain a first-hand understanding of the media ecosystem in the region and the role played by local media in highlighting developmental and public-interest issues.
The six-day media outreach visit will take the delegation to various locations across Assam and Meghalaya, where the journalists will interact with stakeholders and witness first-hand various developmental initiatives, cultural traditions, heritage and achievements of the region.
