Mumbai, Maharashtra, 28th of September, 2026 : Kashmir is often viewed through the lens of politics, security and current affairs. However, journalist, author and researcher Dr. Vaidehi Taman has been making an effort to bring to the forefront another dimension of the Valley—its rich spiritual, literary and civilisational heritage. Through five exclusive chronicles on Kashmir, she has documented its centuries-old knowledge traditions, saints, poets, philosophers and diverse spiritual schools of thought.
Dr. Taman’s journey has gone far beyond a conventional journalism assignment. Through years of travel, research and interactions with local scholars, historians, writers and cultural personalities, she has attempted to understand a cultural memory of Kashmir that often remains hidden behind contemporary headlines.
Among her notable works are ‘Lal Ded – The Mother of Kashmir,’ ‘Abhinavagupta – The Voice of Eternal Shiva,’ and studies associated with the Nilamata Purana. Through these works, she seeks to introduce contemporary readers to Kashmir’s ancient traditions, sacred geography, philosophy, literature and spiritual evolution.
Her writings on Lal Ded, the great 14th-century saint-poet of Kashmir, offer an important perspective on the region’s shared spiritual traditions. Her study of Acharya Abhinavagupta, meanwhile, explores his profound contributions to Kashmir Shaivism, Indian aesthetics, literature and spiritual thought. Her research also extends to the Nilamata Purana, regarded as an important text for understanding Kashmir’s ancient cultural traditions, rituals and social life.
At the heart of Dr. Taman’s work is an effort to encourage people to understand Kashmir not merely through the lens of contemporary events, but also through its deep intellectual and cultural roots.
Speaking about her mission, Dr. Taman says, “Kashmir is far beyond the headlines. Its divine history deserves to be preserved in books. When history is documented, it continues to live. My endeavour is to document and preserve this heritage for generations to come.”
Her book ‘Lal Ded – The Mother of Kashmir’ was also launched in Srinagar during the Lal Ded Literature Award ceremony, which was attended by Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, along with several prominent personalities from the literary, cultural and academic fields. Her books have been published by Gulshan Books Kashmir.
What distinguishes Dr. Taman’s work is that she does not view Kashmir merely as a geographical region. She sees it as a living heritage of knowledge, philosophy and spiritual traditions. Her writings explore the diverse dimensions of saints, yoginis, poets, the Rishi tradition, Kashmir Shaivism and Sufi thought. At a time when news travels rapidly in the digital age, Dr. Vaidehi Taman has chosen the slower yet deeper path of research, travel and books. Her five Kashmir chronicles are part of this larger effort—to preserve a cultural memory that she regards not only as Kashmir’s heritage but also as an integral part of India’s broader civilisational legacy.
